Indian Origin Nurse in Singapore bags Prestigious Award

Singapore : Kala Narayanaswamy, 59 has been conferred with the Prestigious President’s award for nurses serving on the forntline during Covid 19 pandemic. She is one among the five nurses chosen for the award. Award comprises of a certificate signed by Singapore President Halimah Yacob and SGD 10,000 (USD 7,228)

Mrs. Narayanaswamy is the deputy director of nursing at Woodlands Health Campus. She war awarded because of using infection control practices which she learned during 2003 SARS outbreak, in the current Covid pandemic.

She intoduced workflows and standard operating procedures in convert wards at Yishun Community Hospital to care for Covid 19 patients. She has also involved with modernisation of nursing in Singapore including implementation of a self check out inventory management vending machine to track the usage of items.

Kala whas worked as clinical nurse educator before and she is passionate about grooming future nurses.

On hearing the good news, Kala told “I will always tell our nurses who come and join us: ‘I think nursing will never fail to reward you”. ” All these awards and promotions and everything have your name (on them) and are just waiting there for you to come and claim…Your full passion for what you’re doing is always rewarded”.

President’s award for nurses recognises nurses who have delivered outstanding performance and contribution to patient care delivery, education, research and administration.

From 2000, 77 nurses have received this prestigious award.

As per Singapore Ministry of Health, country has 48,744 Covid 19 cases with 27 deaths.
